On Sep 3, 2010, Dr
Vanessa Lin Hui Jun joins Toa Payoh Vet as an associate
vet. She has around two years of experience.
I briefed Vanessa on the values of honesty and
responsibility of a vet by giving her various real-life
examples where the pursuit of making more money erodes such
values. These examples can make interesting reading and be
written in a book for vets.
It is important that I impart the values of my corporation to
young ones and monitor their performance. Vets who don't agree
to the values of Toa Payoh Vets are best working elsewhere.
"There are many things you will learn in a small practice and
these lessons will be very useful when you start your own
practice," I said to Vanessa. "In your previous job, you had
many assistants to do things. Here, you may need to think how
to manage staff and other matters efficiently and economically.
You will become
street-wise. You will graduate to become a street-fighter
before you start your own practice.
I don't expect whether Vanessa to understand my "street-fighter"
remarks. In due course, I will give her examples when she
encounter relevant cases in practice at Toa Payoh Vets.
"I know you have the intention of opening your own practice,"
I know several practices have been set up recently. "That is
OK with me. You have your future to think of. You can see that
my assistant Mr Saw has been with me for over two years and I
have given my blessings for him to join other practices with
better pay and prospects. He has seen and learnt many things
which will make him successful when he opens his own practice
in Myanmar."
Veterinary surgery is one
aspect which many young vets need the time and cases to master
and that can best be done by apprenticing to an old vet with
more than 3 decades of
practice.
Vanessa did her first hamster anaesthesia and surgery
with me. The hamster had a
below-the-chin tumour. She
also did an ear surgery - a
lateral ear canal resection in a dog under my mentorship
and I have the picture in this webpage to commemorate the
occasion of us working together at her first dog ear surgery
operating together with me. She had learnt some of the tricks
of the trade like a blood-less field for surgery and avoiding
the facial nerve branches. A learning experience by being an
apprentice in being able to observe and taught how an
old vet operates is still the best way to be a successful
veterinary surgeon.
Many other tricks of the veterinary trade can only be
gained from being accepted as a disciple to an old vet and by
being acceptable to training.
Being young, Dr Vanessa Lin will be more the type of vet for
the internet generation. I have confidence that she will
make a good veterinarian. I have confidence that she will do
well in my practice.
